The Specialty Crops program delivers applied research and extension services to support diverse production horticulture enterprises, from small, diversified farms to larger row and tree crop operations. With a focus on high-value specialty crops, the program promotes economically resilient and sustainable agriculture in a region characterized by a dynamic urban-rural interface. Core areas of expertise include crop production, soil and fertility management, irrigation, and integrated pest management.
Beyond production support, the program addresses broader challenges and opportunities in regional agriculture, such as new farmer education, agritourism, regulatory compliance, climate-smart practices, and local food system development. Through collaboration with growers, industry professionals, educational institutions, and public agencies, the program strengthens agricultural viability and land stewardship in alignment with UC ANR’s strategic initiatives.

The Specialty Crops and Small Farms Program engaged winegrowers in an online needs assessment survey and with an in-person educational meeting in Livermore. In collaboration with UC Davis Viticulture and Enology more than 20 members of the wine industry learned about irrigation management, disease control, and vinification and regional group, the Mt. Diablo Highlands Quality Wine Alliance is being developed.
